Our history dates back to the early 1800’s. Our forefather, Haj Abbas resided in the major city of Tehran and was the largest and most prominent rug merchant during the Qajar dynasty (1796-1925). Haj Abbas was known for his generosity and wealth throughout the city. He was especially beloved for the large gatherings held at his home during certain holidays; he hosted hundreds of guests and even cooked for them himself. In fact, Haj Abbas was so well-known and trusted that when the Qajar dynasty faced economic recession, the royal family turned to him for financial assistance.

The earliest record of Haj Abbas’s rug business dates back to 1814. His trusted name and generosity meant that homeowners and businesses alike preferred to purchase rugs from him. Haj Abbas also managed to expand his business through exporting rugs to other countries and developed strong ties with merchants around the world. Six generations later, the grandchildren of Haj Abbas continue the family tradition of collecting and trading Persian rugs all around the world. Over the years, the Abbasi name has made its way to Europe, Canada, and the United States.

Ali Abbasi is the 6th generation of Haj Abbas’s descendants to become a prominent rug collector in the District of Columbia in the 1970’s. Ali came to the US at the age of 17 in pursuit of higher education and was later admitted into The George Washington University. The deeply rooted heritage of his forefathers, along with the internationally recognized prestige of Persian rugs however, could not hold Ali back from becoming a prominent collector in the D.C. area. He opened his first store in 1979 on Connecticut Avenue and later moved to his Georgetown location at which the Abbasi Rug Collection lived for 20 years. Over the decades, Ali Abbasi curated only the finest pieces from villages, towns, and cities across Iran, sifting through stacks of rugs in bazaars, collections in mosques, one-of-a-kind pieces in villages and heirloom pieces in homes. He has focused on collecting pieces that have historical and artistic significance including rare signed pieces.

His store became a trusted source for Persian rugs; as a result senators, governors, ambassadors, prime ministers, news anchors, decorators and those with an appreciation for fine art soon became the main clientele of the Abbasi Rug Collection.
